Charges dismissed: felony charges against former police chief dropped

We were proud to secure the dismissal of felony charges against our client Gary Smith recently, alongside W. Stacy Miller II in Brunswick County. Mr. Smith was the former chief of police for Southport Police Department, and had been investigated in 2018 for issues relating to work time and second jobs.

Thanks to the diligence and hard work of our team, the only charges Mr. Smith eventually faced were misdemeanors, with our founder, Raymond Tarlton, commenting: “I think this plea reflects the DA's office realized they couldn't prove it and the truth is our guy did work full-time hours, so they pivoted to a misdemeanor theory of ‘you failed to supervise your guys.’”

We were delighted to use our skills and experience at Tarlton Law to achieve this result for Mr. Smith, and will always fight for clients who have been aggressively charged or unfairly accused.

If you or someone you know is facing charges which need fighting, don’t hesitate to contact us today.
