Appeals

We use creativity and determination to advance the law for clients in a variety of federal and state court appeals

Though a conviction or loss in court can feel daunting and final, it does not mean the case is over.

Tarlton Law has represented clients following conviction through the appeal process, often in the federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and with petitions to the US Supreme Court. We have also represented clients in the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court. While appeals are an exceptionally difficult and daunting process, we have succeeded in appeals even when the prospects initially appeared grim.

Direct appeals in criminal cases are fundamentally different than a trial, as the evidence that can be presented is generally limited to what was presented in the trial and sentencing court. Knowledge of the law and procedure is often a much more in-depth process when pursuing an appeal. Having a talented attorney with experience in this area, whether the appeal is in state court or federal court, is critical to having a meaningful chance of a successful outcome.
